Textbooks: How We Choose Them, How We Use Them, Shall We Lose Them?

Dale, N. B.

This paper describes the results of a survey designed to explore how computer science educators view textbooks: how they choose them, how they use them, how they view the role of textbooks within the curriculum, and how they view the future of textbooks. The survey was posted on the Internet, with invitation email messages sent to the mailing list for SIGCSE, the ACM’s Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education, asking them to fill out the survey. Of the 1053 addresses on the mailing list, 188 recipients responded, giving a response rate of almost 18%. This paper describes the demographics of the respondents, presents the objective responses, and provides a content analysis of the subjective responses.
